Adrian Randolph honed his trial, negotiation, resolution and analytical skills in federal and state courts in California. While in private practice, Adrian defended public entities and elected officials in employment and constitutional matters, and actions grounded in official misconduct. Adrian regularly appeared in closed session to provide legal counsel for the City and County of Sacramento, Sacramento Regional Transit District, and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, among others. Representation of these entities afforded Adrian the opportunity to effectively and efficiently represent his clients in a myriad of high-profile, high-risk litigated matters.
In 2003, Adrian was selected by his peers into the American Board of Trial Advocates. At that time, he was one of the youngest ABOTA members selected to the Sacramento Valley Chapter. Commencing in 2005, and multiple years thereafter, Adrian was selected as a “Super Lawyer” by his Northern California peers in the field of civil litigation / transportation. Adrian’s body of trial and resolution work is vast.
Over the years that Adrian has been an attorney, he has negotiated many seven-figure and eight-figure settlements for his clients. Due to the substantial sums of these settlements, a great many of the cases have confidentiality provisions which prevent either party from discussing the facts and the amount of the settlement. Some of the cases that were resolved were for injuries sustained in automobile and bus accidents, wrongful death due to an unsafe lane change by a semi-trailer, passenger train accidents, premises liability, including compensation for gunshot wounds and dog bites, wrongful termination based on sex and/or race, sexual harassment, and executive employee severance negotiations.
Some other notable matters Adrian handled are:
Beaman, et al v. City of Sacramento: An action brought by three employees against the City Clerk, a Charter Officer, for race discrimination. Adrian successfully defended the City and its charter officer in a six-week jury trial.
Brewer et al. v. Union Pacific Railroad: Three railroad employees alleged employment race and sex discrimination. The matter was tried successfully in a six week jury trial in Oakland, California. Adrian was lead trial counsel.
Brooklyn Yard Injunction: Negotiated with the local neighborhood association in Portland, Oregon to remove a 65 year old injunction restricting certain train movements. (Click here for more about this case.)
Brown et al. v. Sacramento Regional Transit District: A class action suit brought by female employees for disparity in compensation, training and promotion. Adrian was a member of the lead counsel team which secured a favorable outcome for the client.
California High Speed Rail Matters: Adrian was on a team that negotiated with the State of California and commuter rail interest to provide access to Union Pacific’s right of way for the construction of California’s multi-billion-dollar high-speed rail project.
Chatsworth: Involved a head on train collision between a Metrolink commuter train and an Union Pacific Railroad freight train in Chatsworth, Ca. This was a tragic accident. Eleven people were killed, and 180 were injured. The incident resulted in an 150 person class action suit. Adrian and his team successfully represented Union Pacific railroad in state court and in proceedings before the National Transportation Safety Board. (Click here for more about this case.)
Holyn DeLil et al. v. City of Sacramento: This matter involved a class action request for reasonable accommodation in public facilities. Adrian was lead counsel whose representation improved the accessibility and access to public garages and city sidewalks for all citizens.
Doi vs. Union Pacific: This matter involved a single vehicle rollover incident. Doi was a seat-belted passenger in the course and scope of his employment for Union Pacific Railroad. The incident resulted in permanent and severe injuries to Doi’s spine. Adrian was lead defense counsel in a two month jury trial in Pomona, California, representing Union Pacific. Jury verdict was $48 million dollars.
Dept. of Justice v. Union Pacific Railroad: Defended Union Pacific against fire damage to United States forest land caused by railroad operational activities. (Click here for more about this case.)
Fire Loss Claims: Negotiated with the United States Forest Service to resolve multi-million-dollar fire damage and timber loss claims.
Franklin v. Union Pacific Railroad: Adrian successfully defended a claim of employment race discrimination. The matter was tried for six weeks in Sacramento Superior court.

Pabis v. City of Sacramento: Involved a claim against the City by sworn police officers for claims of First Amendment freedom of speech and violation of the Public Safety Officer Bill of Rights (PSOBR). Adrian was lead trial counsel and successfully defended the matter in federal court.

Schulte v. City of Sacramento: Adrian successfully defended the City against a former deputy city attorney’s whistle blower claim alleging misuse of infrastructure development bonds.
Silva v. Union Pacific: Involved a trespasser fatality caused by a train impact. The California appellate court extended the duty of reasonableness to trespassers. (Click here for more about this case.)
Tribal Lands Dispute: Negotiated with the Umatilla Tribe for access rights to Union Pacific’s property in order to access tribal lands.
Union Pacific v. Department of Homeland Security and Customs Border Patrol: The United States fined Union Pacific Railroad for drugs and contraband found on trains that originated from Mexico. The Eight Circuit court of appeal invalidated the fines since Union Pacific neither controlled nor had custody of the trains at the time the contraband was placed on the trains. In addition to assisting with the prosecution of the case against DHS, Adrian successfully negotiated a multi-pronged, multi-year Mitigation Agreement with CBP to improve southern border security. The Mitigation Agreement is the first-of-its-kind for rail transportation and required monitoring by an independent third party. Adrian’s successful management of the relationship between CBP and UP turned an adversarial relationship into a private-public partnership that created the model to be emulated by others. Yi v. Sacramento Regional Transit District: Involved a train versus passenger vehicle collision. The incident resulted in fatalities and severe and permanent spinal injuries. Adrian was a member of the defense team.
